Hand grinder
Cold brew grind setting for the Normcore Hand Grinder
23–26clicks
That is where to start with a light roast. It should come out looking like coarse sea salt. Medium roasts go to 25–28 and dark roasts to 26–29.
The setting, by roast
Lighter roasts are harder to pull flavor out of, so they grind a little finer and steep longer. Darker roasts go the other way. The dial runs from 0 to 30 clicks.
| Roast | Setting | Looks like | Steep in the fridge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light roast | 23–26 clicks | coarse sea salt | 18–22 h |
| Medium roast | 25–28 clicks | coarse kosher salt | 14–18 h |
| Dark roast | 26–29 clicks | raw sugar | 10–14 h |
Where the number comes from
Nobody has published a cold brew number for this grinder that we could find, so treat 26 for a medium roast as a place to start.
If you changed the burrs
Different burrs cut differently at the same number. Here is where each set starts.
| Burr set | Light | Medium | Dark |
|---|---|---|---|
| 38mm Stainless Contemporary Conical (stock) | 23–26 clicks | 25–28 clicks | 26–29 clicks |
| 38mm Titanium-Coated Contemporary ConicalSame geometry as stock with a titanium coating for edge retention; click numbers should track the stock burr. | 23–26 clicks | 25–28 clicks | 26–29 clicks |
| 44mm Contemporary ConicalLarger burr offered on some V2 listings; grinds faster per crank turn, but no documented click-to-micron mapping exists, so treat as approximate. | 23–26 clicks | 25–28 clicks | 26–29 clicks |
| 46mm Contemporary Conical (V3 body)Stock burr on the newer V3 housing; not a drop-in swap for the V2 body. | 23–26 clicks | 25–28 clicks | 26–29 clicks |
How to use it
- Set it. Set the dial to 23–26 clicks. That is the light roast setting. Use the table above for anything darker.
- Grind and look. You want pieces about the size of coarse sea salt. Coarse settings go quickly by hand.
- Steep. Give it 18–22 hours in the fridge, or 12–14 on the counter.
- Taste and adjust. Too bitter? Go coarser next time. Too sour? Go finer. Move about 3 clicks at a time.
Let the app keep track.
