This is the recipe Bodum publishes for this brewer, and it is what Cold Brew Studio opens with when you pick it. It makes about 4 cups, best straight over ice.
How the maker does it
Bodum's official cold brew recipe for the BEAN: coarsely grind medium-to-dark roast beans to a texture resembling ground sea salt and add 163g to the carafe (about 13.5g per cup, max 12 cups); slowly pour in 1,300g/1,300mL of cool, fresh (filtered preferred) water in a circular motion to saturate the grounds evenly, then stir gently with a plastic or wooden spoon. Bodum notes the BEAN carafe has a 1,500mL total capacity, and using these amounts keeps it from being overfilled. Seal with the silicone (non-plunger) lid and steep in the fridge 12-24 hours (some Bodum guidance gives 18-24h fridge / 12-15h room temp as alternate windows). To finish, swap in the plunger lid and slowly press the plunger down to trap the grounds at the bottom before pouring. Dilute each serving to taste with water and/or milk; ratio is described as 1:8 ground coffee to water.

The recipe, by strength
Each one fills this brewer as far as it honestly goes. Numbers are for a light roast steeping in the fridge.
| Strength | Ratio | Coffee | Water | Steep | Makes | Drink it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday | 1:9.5 | 137 g | 1,300 mL | 18–22 h | about 4¼ cups | straight over ice |
| Strong | 1:7.5 | 163 g | 1,223 mL | 18–22 h | about 3¾ cups | with a splash of milk |
| Jet fuel | 1:5.3 | 163 g | 864 mL | 18–22 h | about 3½ cups | cut with a little water or milk |
| Concentrate | 1:4.5 | 163 g | 734 mL | 18–22 h | about 3½ cups | mixed 1:1 with water or milk |
If your beans are darker
Darker roasts give up their flavor faster, so they brew at a slightly wider ratio and steep for less time.
| Roast | Ratio | Coffee | Water | Steep in the fridge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 1:9.5 | 137 g | 1,300 mL | 18–22 h |
| Medium | 1:10 | 130 g | 1,300 mL | 14–18 h |
| Dark | 1:10.5 | 124 g | 1,300 mL | 10–14 h |

How it goes
- Grounds in.
- Water over.
- Stir once.
- Lid on, into the fridge.
Grind coarse, about the size of coarse sea salt. Find the number for your grinder.
Good to know
This is a French-press-style cold brewer: the plunger's mesh screen (not a paper or felt filter) traps the grounds, so a coarse, sea-salt-like grind is essential — finer grounds will work past the mesh and cloud the concentrate — and the plunge should be slow and steady at the end of the steep rather than fast.
This brewer takes about 163 g of coffee at most. Stronger recipes can’t add more grounds, so they use less water instead. That is why Strong, Jet fuel and Concentrate come in under the full 1,300 mL.
