This is the recipe KitchenAid publishes for this brewer, and it is what Cold Brew Studio opens with when you pick it. It makes about 9¼ cups, best mixed 1:1 with water or milk.
How the maker does it
Official KCM5912SX manual: place 330 g (11.6 oz) coarse ground coffee in the steeper, pour 1.25 L (42 oz) water evenly over the grounds, wait for grounds to settle, then add 0.5 L (17 oz) more water. Steep 12-24 hours (room temp or fridge). Remove steeper, let drain — yields up to 38 oz (1023 mL) concentrate. Serve diluted ~1:3 (concentrate:water/milk).

The recipe, by strength
Each one fills this brewer as far as it honestly goes. Numbers are for a light roast steeping in the fridge.
| Strength | Ratio | Coffee | Water | Steep | Makes | Drink it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday | 1:9.5 | 184 g | 1,750 mL | 18–22 h | about 5¾ cups | straight over ice |
| Strong | 1:7.5 | 233 g | 1,750 mL | 18–22 h | about 5½ cups | with a splash of milk |
| Jet fuel | 1:5.3 | 330 g | 1,749 mL | 18–22 h | about 7 cups | cut with a little water or milk |
| Concentrate | 1:4.5 | 330 g | 1,485 mL | 18–22 h | about 7 cups | mixed 1:1 with water or milk |
If your beans are darker
Darker roasts give up their flavor faster, so they brew at a slightly wider ratio and steep for less time.
| Roast | Ratio | Coffee | Water | Steep in the fridge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 1:9.5 | 184 g | 1,750 mL | 18–22 h |
| Medium | 1:10 | 175 g | 1,750 mL | 14–18 h |
| Dark | 1:10.5 | 167 g | 1,750 mL | 10–14 h |

How it goes
- Grounds in the basket.
- Water over, slowly.
- Stir once.
- Lid on, into the fridge.
Grind coarse, about the size of coarse sea salt. Find the number for your grinder.
Good to know
The steeper is a plain metal mesh basket, not a felt or paper filter, so KitchenAid explicitly warns to use only coarsely ground coffee — finer grounds pass through the mesh into the concentrate. Otherwise this is a standard steep-and-lift-out-the-basket immersion brew; it makes a concentrate meant for diluting (1:3), not a ready-to-drink brew.
This brewer takes about 330 g of coffee at most. Stronger recipes can’t add more grounds, so they use less water instead. That is why Jet fuel and Concentrate come in under the full 1,750 mL.
